Yuliya Yurchenko

On Thursday, January 16, at 18:30, we invite you to attend a lecture by Yuliya Yurchenko “Rooting and eradicating global extractivism: a view into the future (of Ukraine)?” as part of the public program for the exhibition of the nominees for the Future Generation Art Prize 2024.
The event will take place on the 4th floor of the PinchukArtCentre (space with the work of Veronika Hapchenko) in the format of an online lecture. Participation is free with prior registration: https://forms.gle/eWZ1b5wKWxYye4YV7
Some of the projects of the Future Generation Art Prize 2024 exhibition address the theme of “decolonization of nature” and criticism of the extractive economy. In particular, Andrius Arutiunian reflects on how history, politics, and poetics influence the understanding of the concept of “surface” and demonstrates how the landscape retains traces of exploitation. Hira Nabi analyzes the consequences of colonialism and ecosystem depletion in her project. And Veronika Hapchenko draws attention to the legacy of Soviet mega-projects that illustrate totalitarian attempts to “fix” humans and nature.
During the lecture, Dr. Yurchenko will focus on the intertwining themes of the selected art projects and dive into the social and economic history of the contexts that underlie them.
During the event, we will discuss:● What is the historical essence, experience, and meaning of human colonialism over nature as a phenomenon? ● What role do individuals, socio-economic systems, and value systems play in the (re)creation of colonialism and imperialism? ● What are the alternative visions and ways to imagine and build a post-extractive world, Ukraine? What is the role of art in this?
