On March 30 at 10:30 AM (GMT+1), the Leipzig Book Fair (Germany) will host the presentation of the book "Reclaiming History. Decoloniality and Art in Ukraine after 1991." The publication is the result of two years of work by the PinchukArtCentre's Research Platform.
The invited Research Platform curator, Kateryna Botanova, the anthology's editor and compiler, and artist Lada Nakonechna will present the book. Kateryna Rietz-Rakull, director of the Ukrainian Institute in Germany, will moderate the event. During the presentation, the speakers will discuss key topics of the book, including the impact of the colonial past on contemporary Ukrainian art and the challenges and opportunities of Ukraine’s art scene in the current geopolitical context.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, researchers have focused on analysing the discourse of decoloniality and its impact on cultural processes and artistic practices in Ukraine. They are analysing Western narratives about Soviet and post-Soviet art, which are often linked to Russian narratives and financial influences. Additionally, the researchers explore how Ukrainian artists engage with themes of memory, history, subjectivity, and the rethinking of identities.
