The introductory lecture of the public program for the Future Generation Art Prize 2024 exhibition will be dedicated to the theme of decoloniality, which is addressed by a large number of this year's nominees through different aspects and levels. In particular, Ipeh Nur and Behbaatar Enkhtur explore local mythologies, Zhang Xu Zhang analyzes the relationship between the local and the global, and Nolan Oswald Dennis reveals the decolonization of knowledge. Also, Andrius Harutyunyan, Gira Nabi, Shinzo Aanza and Veronika Gapchenko raise the issue of “decolonizing nature” and criticizing extractivist economics. During the lecture, we will talk with the historian and curator Oleksii Savchenko about:
- Why did the idea of Orientalism gradually change from the usual “fashion for the Oriental” in European literature and art to the comprehension of the colonial nature of knowledge about conquered peoples?- What is postcolonial theory? When and under what circumstances did it emerge?- How is coloniality manifested and reproduced through art, even after the end of the “colonial era”?- What is the decolonial turn and what is the essence of decolonial initiatives?- How do museums interact with the heritage of indigenous peoples and embody the decolonial experience today?
