In the triptych Impossibility of a Pure Gaze, Krystyna Melnyk reflects on the fact that a pure look at the male body is no longer possible. The tender, intact flesh of a young man is adjacent to wounds that remind us of the intrusion of political and historical contexts into sensual experience. But it is not about physical bodily reality, but about a “deformed” vision. Thus, in the central work of the triptych, the artist attempts to heal the damaged gaze and free a person from the traumas caused by history.
Krystyna Melnyk is an artist nominated for the PinchukArtCentre Prize 2025. In her practice, Melnyk reveals the beauty of the wounded and vulnerable body, using techniques inherent in sacred painting. The artist explores the influence of history and memory on corporeality and its perception.
