The PinchukArtCentre will present an exhibition by Oleksandr Roytburd, one of the creators of the new wave of Ukrainian art at the dawn of the country's independence. It will showcase Roytburd as both an artist and a public figure, struggling for independence and the influence of art on society, interacting with authorities, standing up to and coming to terms with them.
A prolific and distinctive artist whose works are treasured by the MoMA in New York, the National Art Museum of Ukraine and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Roytburd was also one of the most active and influential communicators of Ukrainian culture and society. He was behind the establishment of the Soros Centre for Contemporary Art in Odesa and other art institutions, and was among those who pieced together the original PinchukArtCentre collection. Roytburd was repeatedly named among Ukraine's top 100 influential people. Oleksandr Roytburd passed away in 2021 due to Covid-19 complications.
Kostiantyn Doroshenko is the curator of the project. In 2001, he curated Roytburd's first solo museum exhibition at the Kyiv History Museum branch.
